had undertaken to erect at a cost of $ 35,000, which he
later increased to $ 50,000 in order to make the building

fully adequate, and on the recent anniversary of His
Majesty's birthday I had the honour of unveiling a statue
of H.R.H. the Princess of Wales which was also the gift
of Mr Mody to the Colony. In addition to these gifts he
has since I have been in Hongkong erected a Pavilion for
the Kowloon Athletic Association, and has given generously
to many good objects in the Colony.

Mr Mody is a Parsee gentleman who has lived
in the Colony for fifty years, where he has done business
as a stockbroker. He is most highly respected and bears
a blameless character. His patriotism, loyalty and public
spirit are unusually great. He has of late been in very
bad health and subject to fainting fits any one of which
I am informed by the doctors may suddenly terminate his
life. It is I believe his greatest ambition to live to
see at least the foundation stone of the University laid,
and perhaps its completion for which in any case he will
provide in his will.
